Ur&Penn Men's Jewellery Review: Steel, Silver, Gold
Sweden's biggest watch and jewellery chain, reviewed on what decides value over time: declared materials, published specification and price per piece.

Ur&Penn Men's Jewellery
Almost every Swedish high street has an Ur&Penn. Founded in 1943, the chain now runs over a hundred stores across Scandinavia and describes itself as the single largest watch and jewellery chain in the Nordic market. For a lot of Swedish men it is simply where you go when you want a watch, and where you end up glancing at the jewellery counter on the way out.
This review looks at what that counter actually holds for men, what the product pages declare, and where the range stops. Transparency first: we run Monrich, so read the comparisons with that in mind. Everything stated here about Ur&Penn comes from their published pages at the time of writing. As a reference while you read, our men's cuban chains sit in the one segment their catalogue leaves thin.
Quick verdict
Ur&Penn is a genuinely good place to buy a watch, a silver piece or real gold, and it has an advantage no online-only brand can match: you can walk in, try it on, and hand it back over the counter if it is wrong.
What a careful buyer should know is that the men's jewellery sits at the two ends of the range rather than in the middle. The affordable side is the bijouterier line, which the company itself describes as non-precious materials, and which is built almost entirely around women's pieces. The serious side is genuine silver and real 9K or 18K gold, priced accordingly. The middle ground, a gold-tone men's chain built for daily wear with a published plating specification, is the part their catalogue barely covers.
Who is Ur&Penn?

The name tells you the origin story: watches and pens. Founded in 1943 by Erling Persson, the chain has grown into what it now calls the single largest watch and jewellery chain in the Nordic market, with over one hundred stores.
The navigation itself shows the priority order: men's watches first, then women's watches, then real gold, then silver, then bijouterier. Jewellery is a department inside a watch business rather than the whole company, and their stated vision is broader than jewellery too, summed up as being first choice for anyone who wants to express their personality through accessories.
That matters for a buyer in a practical way. A chain this size buys across a huge catalogue at every price point, which is why the range spans thirty-nine kronor to nearly twenty thousand. It also means no single category gets the depth a specialist gives it.
The catalogue in three tiers

Ur&Penn splits its jewellery cleanly, and to their credit they label the split honestly.
Bijouterier, roughly 39 to 299 kronor
Nearly a thousand products, and the company defines the category on its own page as jewellery made from affordable non-precious materials, naming stainless steel, brass and zinc alloys outright. That is more candid than most of the category manages. The line is overwhelmingly earrings, delicate necklaces, sets, bracelets and anklets, and we found no men's curb or cuban chains in it.
Silver, genuine 925
This is where the men's pieces live. Marked SILVER 925 and sold under their Urban Story label, with examples such as a 3mm Venezia men's necklace at 57cm for 1 999 kronor, a men's anchor-link bracelet at 21cm for 799 kronor, and a chain bracelet with an engraving plate at 899 kronor. Necklaces across the silver range run from 149 to 1 999 kronor.
Real gold, 9K and 18K
From roughly 798 kronor to 19 900, with most pieces between 1 200 and 6 700. They describe a growing men's selection here, including masculine gold chains, with a 9K Figaro necklace at 51cm listed at 2 598 kronor.
What is declared, and what isn't
On materials, Ur&Penn is clearer than much of the market, and that deserves saying plainly.
Genuine silver is marked 925. Real gold is stated in karat. And the affordable line is not dressed up as something it is not: the company names steel, brass and zinc alloys in its own definition of the category. A shopper who reads the page knows what they are buying, which is not something every brand can claim.
What we did not find on the pages we consulted is a published plating specification on the gold-coloured pieces, meaning no process and no thickness in microns, and no separate written guarantee against plating wear or tarnishing. In this price bracket that is the category norm rather than an outlier. It does mean that on gold-coloured items you are buying on brand and design rather than on published specification, and it is the single reason a daily-wear buyer might look further.
The gap: a gold-tone chain for every day

Put the three tiers side by side and a shape appears.
| Tier | Price | Material | Men's chains? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bijouterier | ~39-299 kr | Non-precious, steel, brass, zinc alloy (their wording) | Essentially none |
| Silver | ~149-1 999 kr | Genuine silver 925 | Yes, from ~799 kr, up to 1 999 kr |
| Real gold | ~798-19 900 kr | 9K and 18K gold | Yes, from ~2 598 kr |
If you want a gold-tone men's chain you can wear every day, shower in and forget about, the affordable tier does not really carry it and the gold tier costs thousands. Genuine silver is a fine answer, but it is a different commitment: it tarnishes, it wants polishing, and a 3mm men's chain in silver lands near two thousand kronor.
That is precisely the space a specialist fills. Our own cuban and curb chains are stainless steel with 18K gold PVD at a declared thickness of one to two microns, backed by a written twelve-month guarantee against tarnishing, with a permanent two-for-one across the catalogue. Narrower catalogue, published number, different job.
The store advantage is real
It would be dishonest to write this review without giving the physical shop its due, because it solves problems online shopping genuinely cannot.
You can hold a 4mm next to a 6mm and see the difference on your own neck instead of guessing from a photograph. You can check a length against your collarbone rather than measuring string at the kitchen table. If it is wrong, you hand it back at a counter and speak to a person, and the company advertises thirty days open purchase on top of that. With over a hundred stores in the region, that counter is usually close by.
For a first piece, for a gift where the size is a guess, or for anyone who simply prefers to buy in person, that is worth more than any specification sheet.
When Ur&Penn is enough, and when to look further
Neither answer is about quality. It is about what the piece has to survive.
Ur&Penn is the right call when you want a watch, when you want genuine silver or real gold from a shop you can walk into, when you are buying a gift and want the safety of an easy return, or when the piece is occasional rather than permanent.
Look further when the piece never comes off. Daily wear, gym, showers and sweat are the conditions that expose a coating, and that is where a declared process and thickness stop being a technical detail and start being the whole purchase. If the chain lives on you, ask any brand for the number of microns and for the guarantee in writing.
Ur&Penn vs Monrich
Two different businesses, and the table says where each one wins.
| Feature | Ur&Penn | Monrich |
|---|---|---|
| Model | 100+ physical stores, watches and jewellery | Online specialist, men's chains and rings |
| Try before buying | Yes, in store | No |
| Genuine silver and gold | Yes, 925 and 9K/18K | No, plated steel only |
| Gold-tone daily chain | Thin in the affordable tier | Core range |
| Plating specification | Not published on the pages we consulted | 18K gold PVD, 1-2 microns declared |
| Written tarnish guarantee | Not found on the pages we consulted | 12 months in writing |
| Standing offer | Seasonal campaigns and outlet | Permanent two for one |
Our limits belong in the same table: we have no silver line and nothing in solid gold, so for a hallmarked piece or an heirloom, Ur&Penn is simply the better address.

Frequently asked questions
Is Ur&Penn good for men's jewellery?
It is a solid choice for watches, genuine 925 silver and real 9K or 18K gold, sold through more than a hundred stores where you can try pieces on. Their affordable line is mostly women's pieces, so gold-tone men's chains for daily wear are the thin part of the range.
What are Ur&Penn bijouterier made of?
The company defines the category itself as jewellery made from affordable non-precious materials, naming stainless steel, brass and zinc alloys. That is unusually clear labelling for the price bracket, and it tells you exactly what you are paying for.
How much is a men's silver chain at Ur&Penn?
Their men's silver pieces run from roughly 799 kronor for a bracelet up to 1 999 kronor for a 3mm Venezia necklace at 57cm. Real gold men's chains start higher, with a 9K Figaro at 51cm listed at 2 598 kronor.
Does Ur&Penn publish a plating thickness?
We found no process or micron figure on the gold-coloured pieces on the pages we consulted, and no separate written guarantee on plating. That is normal in this bracket, but it means daily-wear buyers are comparing on brand rather than on a published number.
Can I return jewellery to an Ur&Penn store?
The company advertises thirty days open purchase, and with a store network that size the counter is usually nearby. Being able to return in person is one of the real advantages a high-street chain has over any online brand, ours included.
One segment.
One published number.
Cuban and curb chains in 316L stainless steel with 18K gold PVD, one to two microns declared on every piece. Written twelve-month tarnish guarantee, permanent two for one.
