By Billgren Review

Ask a Swedish man where he bought his signet ring and there is a good chance the answer is By Billgren. The brand has spent years building the widest men's accessories catalogue in the country, sold through jewellers from Malmo to Lulea as well as its own shop, and it covers ground most online-only labels never touch: watches, wallets, cufflinks, leather, beads, steel and sterling silver under one roof.

This review looks at what that breadth actually buys you, where the range is genuinely strong, and which questions the product pages leave open. Disclosure first: we run Monrich, so read the comparisons knowing that. Everything below about By Billgren comes from their published product pages at the time of writing. For reference as you read, our signet ring collection sits in the same category as their strongest range.

Section 01

Quick verdict

By Billgren is the safest broad choice in Swedish men's jewellery. The catalogue is deep, the silver line is genuinely precious metal, the signet ring range is the widest you will find locally, and the pieces are sold through real jewellers you can walk into.

Where a careful buyer should look closer: on the steel pieces the product pages state the material family, stainless steel, but not the steel grade, and on the gold-tone versions they do not publish a plating process or a thickness in microns. We also found no written anti-tarnish or plating warranty on the site. None of that makes the pieces bad, and at these prices it is the category norm. It does mean that on the gold-tone steel specifically, you are buying on brand and design rather than on published specification.

Section 02

Who is By Billgren?

signet ring styles laid out on marble, the range By Billgren is strongest in

By Billgren positions itself around stylish men's accessories, and it means accessories in the widest sense.

The catalogue runs across bracelets, necklaces, rings and earrings, then keeps going into wallets, card holders, cufflinks, tie clips, sunglasses, watches and watch straps, plus gift sets and a smaller-sized teen line. Two things follow from that breadth. First, it is a gifting brand as much as a self-purchase brand, which is why the engravable ranges and the presentation sets matter so much to it. Second, jewellery is one department among several rather than the entire company, which is the structural difference with a specialist.

The jewellery itself splits cleanly in two. The steel range carries first names beginning with H for necklaces and C for rings, priced for everyday buying. Above it sits Nobel by Billgren, a sterling silver line with its own identity and its own price ladder.

Section 03

The steel range

gold PVD chain worn in the pool, what a declared plating thickness is for

This is where most By Billgren jewellery is bought, and the pricing is straightforward.

Steel necklaces on the current pages sit between roughly 299 and 599 kronor. Hanley and Hale open the range at 299 kr, Halton at 349 kr, Howard and Hector at 399 kr, Hakon, Harald and Henning at 449 kr, Harris at 499 kr, Helix at 549 kr and the wider Hyde at 599 kr. Pendant pieces, dog tags, crosses and a compass sit in the same band, and leather and bead necklaces overlap it from below.

Several models are offered in a gold tone alongside the plain steel, Henning, Hyde, Harris, the Harvey compass and the Hallow cross among them, and there is an 8mm curb style, Hannibal, at 449 kr for buyers who want presence without moving up to silver.

What the pages give you is the material family and the dimensions. What they do not give you, on the gold-tone versions, is the plating process or its thickness. That is the single specification that decides how long a gold finish survives daily wear, and it is worth knowing that you are not being told it here.

Section 04

Signet rings: the strong suit

personalised monogram signet ring, the engraving that makes the piece yours

If By Billgren has one category where it genuinely leads in Sweden, it is klackringar.

The steel signets run from Cole and Cooper at the accessible end through Clayton, Casper and Clinton around 349 kr to Cody and Chad at 399 kr, with several offered in gold tone as well as plain steel. Alongside them sits a deep bench of statement and so-called stress rings in the same 299 to 399 kr band, which is unusual: most brands carry two or three signets, not a wall of them.

At the top, the Nobel line offers a sterling silver signet at 1,695 kr, along with braided, ribbed and link silver rings from 795 kr upwards. For a buyer who wants a precious-metal signet from a Swedish name, that is a legitimate answer at a legitimate price.

Engraving is offered across marked ranges, which for a signet is not a detail but the point of the piece. If your plan is a monogram or initials, this is a real advantage over brands that sell the shape without the service. Our signet ring guide covers faces, fingers and sizing if you are choosing your first one.

Section 05

Nobel: the silver line

silver-tone chain over a white tee, the precious metal end of the range

The Nobel range is where By Billgren stops competing with fashion steel and starts competing with jewellers.

The curb chains, pansar in Swedish, ladder by width in a way that shows exactly what precious metal costs: 3mm at 1,695 kr, 4mm at 2,295 kr, 6mm at 3,695 kr and 8mm at 7,395 kr. Figaro sits lower at 1,195 kr for 4mm and 2,095 kr for 6mm, while heavier links, an emperor chain at 2,895 kr and a 5mm link at 5,095 kr, sit above. Braided and oxidised versions run through the range, and some pieces are rhodium plated, which is the standard way to slow tarnishing on silver.

This is honest pricing for 925 sterling. It is also a different purchase from a steel chain: silver is a precious metal that patinas, wants occasional polishing, and rewards you with material value that plated steel does not have. The 8mm silver curb at 7,395 kr is not expensive for what it is; it is simply a different category from a 599 kr steel chain, and the brand is clear about which is which.

Section 06

Materials: what is declared

The site states plainly that the necklaces are made in stainless steel and in 925 sterling silver. On the silver, that is a complete answer: 925 is a defined standard, and rhodium plating where it is used is named.

On the steel it is a partial answer, and the gap matters in one specific place. The pages we checked state stainless steel without naming the grade, and on the gold-tone pieces they describe the finish as gold plated without stating whether it is standard electroplating, ion plating or PVD, and without a thickness in microns. We also could not find a published anti-tarnish or plating warranty anywhere on the site.

For context, that is normal for the category rather than a failing unique to this brand. Most Swedish and European brands in this price band publish exactly as much. It becomes a decision point only if the piece you want is a gold-tone steel one you intend to wear every day, because process and thickness are the two variables that decide whether that finish lasts a season or several years.

For comparison, we publish 1 to 2 microns of 18K gold PVD on 316L stainless steel on every Monrich product page and back it with a written 12-month anti-tarnish guarantee. That is not a claim that our pieces are better made; it is a claim that the number is on the page, so you can compare it.

Section 07

Prices and value

Two ladders, two different value cases.

Category By Billgren What you are paying for
Steel necklaces ~299-599 kr Design, brand, local retail, gift readiness
Steel signet rings ~299-399 kr The widest signet choice in Sweden, engraving available
Silver rings (Nobel) ~795-1,695 kr 925 sterling, precious metal value
Silver curb chains ~1,195-7,395 kr Weight in sterling, priced by width

The steel band is competitive and fairly priced for what it is. The silver band is where the brand earns its reputation, because there the material itself is the value and nothing is hidden: 925 is 925.

The one place to think twice is the middle: a gold-tone steel piece at 449 to 599 kr costs real money for a finish whose durability is not specified. If that piece is for occasional wear, it is a perfectly sensible buy. If it is going to live on you daily, ask the question about process and thickness before paying, whoever you buy from.

Section 08

By Billgren vs Monrich

presentation box, the gifting end of the category both brands serve

These are not the same kind of company, and the comparison is only useful if that is said first.

Feature By Billgren Monrich
Catalogue Very broad: jewellery, watches, leather, accessories Narrow: men's chains, bracelets, signets
Steel spec Stainless steel, grade not stated on the pages checked 316L, stated on every product page
Gold finish Gold tone, process and thickness not published 18K gold PVD, 1-2 microns declared
Precious metal Yes, Nobel sterling silver line No silver and no solid gold line
Written plating guarantee None found on site 12 months anti-tarnish, in writing
Signet range Very deep, engraving available Focused selection
Where you buy Own shop plus jewellers across Sweden Online, tracked delivery to Sweden
Standing offer Seasonal sale pricing Permanent two for one

Read honestly, By Billgren wins on breadth, on precious metal and on being physically present in Swedish towns. We win on published specification, on the written guarantee and on effective price per piece once the two for one is applied. Neither of those advantages cancels the other out.

Section 09

Which one fits you?

Choose By Billgren if:

  • You want a signet ring, especially engraved, and want to choose from a real range
  • You want sterling silver from a Swedish name at transparent prices
  • You want to see and try the piece in a jeweller before buying
  • You are buying a gift and want the full presentation and accessory range

Choose Monrich if:

  • You want the gold look for daily wear with the plating specification published
  • You want a written anti-tarnish guarantee rather than an unstated finish
  • You are building a rotation of two or three pieces and want the effective price halved
  • Cuban and tennis chains specifically are what you are shopping for

Plenty of Swedish wardrobes end up holding both: a silver signet for the hand, a specified gold chain for the neck. Our guide to the best curb and Cuban chains in Sweden compares the chain end of the market in full, and the Trendhim review covers the other big catalogue Swedish buyers meet.

Frequently asked questions

Is By Billgren a good brand?

Yes, within what it sets out to be. It is one of Sweden's most established men's accessories names, the sterling silver Nobel line is real precious metal at transparent prices, and the signet ring range is the widest available locally. The open question is on gold-tone steel, where the plating process and thickness are not published.

What are By Billgren pieces made of?

The site states stainless steel and 925 sterling silver, plus leather and stones on the bead and leather ranges. Some silver pieces are rhodium plated. The steel grade is not named on the pages we checked, and the gold-tone finish is described without a process or a micron figure.

How much does a By Billgren necklace cost?

Steel necklaces sit at roughly 299 to 599 kronor. Sterling silver curb chains ladder by width from about 1,195 kr for a 4mm Figaro to 7,395 kr for an 8mm pansar, which is normal pricing for the weight of metal involved.

Does By Billgren offer a warranty on plating?

We found no published anti-tarnish or plating warranty on the site at the time of writing. That is common in the category. If a written guarantee on the finish matters to you, check each brand's own terms before buying, ours included.

By Billgren or Monrich for an everyday gold chain?

For a gold finish worn daily, the deciding question is what is published. We state 1 to 2 microns of 18K PVD on 316L with a written 12-month anti-tarnish guarantee; By Billgren does not publish an equivalent figure on its gold-tone steel. For a silver signet or an engraved ring, By Billgren is the stronger choice.
