Best Curb and Cuban Chains in Sweden

Search for a men's chain in Swedish and two words dominate: pansarlank and cubankedja. Retailers use them almost interchangeably, which makes comparing chains harder than it should be. This guide clears up the terminology first, then ranks the six options a Swedish buyer actually meets, from budget steel at the mall to sterling silver at the premium end.

Disclosure up front: we run Monrich, and our own chains are in this list, first, for reasons we defend openly with published numbers. Judge for yourself.

As a visual reference while you read, the Cuban chain collection shows the category.

Section 01

Pansarlank or cubankedja?

The two names describe two related but different links, and knowing which one you want saves a wrong purchase.

Pansarlank (curb link) is the classic flattened, twisted link: each link lies flat against the next, the profile is slim and the surface catches light in a calm, even line. It is the default masculine chain in Scandinavia, worn thin as an everyday piece or thick as a statement.

Cubankedja (Cuban link) is the denser evolution: links are tighter, thicker and often bevelled, so the chain reads as one solid band of metal. Same family, more presence, more weight for the same width.

Rule of thumb: a 3-5mm pansarlank disappears elegantly into daily wear; a Cuban of the same width makes itself known. Above 8mm both are statement pieces. Our Cuban chain guide covers widths and lengths in detail.

Section 02

For daily wear: the specialists

4mm gold cuban chain: the daily width most buyers actually choose

1. Monrich

Price band: ~450-1,250 kr · Material: premium 316L stainless steel with 18K gold PVD plating, 1-2 microns declared on every product page · Best for: the gold look worn daily, shower and gym included.

We put ourselves first for one reason we can defend: the specification is published. PVD thickness in microns on every piece, a written 12-month anti-tarnish guarantee, and a permanent buy-one-get-one-free that halves the effective price when you build a rotation. The honest limit: no solid gold and no sterling line; if you want precious metal, look further down this list.

2. Trendhim / Seizmont

Price band: ~200-2,600 kr · Material: stainless steel, some sterling and titanium; gold tones without a declared process or thickness · Best for: the widest selection in one Swedish-language shop.

The Danish giant behind Seizmont carries thousands of men's accessories with genuinely unmatched 365-day returns. The trade-off: on the gold-tone chains the plating process and thickness are not published, and the 2-year warranty covers manufacturing defects, not plating wear. 3. Ur&Penn

Price band: ~149-499 kr · Material: gold-plated steel on the entry chains, sterling 925 at the top of the range · Best for: an impulse-friendly chain from a store you can walk into.

Sweden's mall staple sells a 2mm gold-plated steel pansarlank for around 149 kr and thin 925 versions up to about 499 kr. The plating process and thickness are not declared, which at this price is expected: it is a fashion purchase, not a specification purchase, and it is honest about being exactly that.

4. By Billgren

Price band: ~190-600 kr in steel, more in silver · Material: 316L stainless steel, brass, leather; some sterling · Best for: a Swedish name with a real pansarlank tradition.

Johan Billgren has built one of Sweden's most established men's jewellery brands, and the steel pansarlank necklaces (like the 8mm Havel around 189 kr at retailers) are honest, well-made basics sold through jewellers across the country. Gold-coloured versions exist, but as with most of the category, without a published plating specification.

Section 04

Minimalist and premium

8mm gold cuban link: statement territory, where weight and width take over

5. Edblad

Material: stainless steel with 14K gold plating on the gilded pieces · Best for: the pared-back Scandinavian look, widely available in Swedish department stores.

Edblad's design language is quieter than the hip-hop end of the category: thinner chains, cleaner lines, a brand your girlfriend probably already owns. The steel base is solid; the gold layer is 14K rather than 18K, which reads slightly paler, and thickness is not published per piece.

6. Tom Wood

Price band: roughly 1,500-4,000+ kr · Material: sterling silver 925, solid gold on premium pieces · Best for: the design-house chain you keep for a decade.

The Norwegian design brand sold through Care of Carl and NK sits in a different category: precious metal, fashion-week credibility, prices to match. A Tom Wood curb chain is a considered purchase and a beautiful one; it also tarnishes like all silver and wants occasional polishing. Aspirational benchmark rather than direct alternative.

Section 05

How to choose

Four questions sort the whole market faster than any ranking.

Declared or undeclared? Any brand can write "gold plated". The useful brands write what process (PVD versus standard electroplating) and how thick (in microns). Published numbers let you compare; missing numbers mean you are buying photography.

Steel or silver? 316L steel with PVD survives showers, gym and Swedish winters without maintenance. Sterling is a precious metal that patinas and wants polishing. Neither is wrong; they are different ownership experiences.

What does the warranty actually cover? Most "guarantees" in this category exclude plating wear, which is the thing that actually happens. A written anti-tarnish guarantee that names the plating is rare, and worth searching a brand's site for before buying.

Width for the use. 3-5mm for daily wear, 5-7mm for presence, 8mm and up for statement. Our size guide converts lengths.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between pansarlank and a Cuban chain?

Pansarlank is the classic flat curb link; the Cuban is its denser, tighter evolution that reads as a solid band of metal. Same family, more presence per millimetre on the Cuban.

What is the best chain for daily wear in Sweden?

For the gold look without maintenance: 316L steel with declared PVD plating, 3-5mm wide. For precious metal and a patina you maintain: thin sterling silver. Check that the plating thickness is published before paying gold-level prices.

Is gold-plated steel from budget stores worth it?

For occasional wear, yes: a 149 kr chain that lasts a season is honest fashion. For daily wear, undeclared thin plating typically fades within months; declared PVD at 1-2 microns is built for years.

Do these chains survive showers and the gym?

316L steel with PVD plating does, by construction. Sterling silver survives water but tarnishes faster with sweat and needs polishing. Undeclared budget plating is the one to keep dry.

Which brands publish their plating specification?

Very few. Monrich publishes 1-2 micron 18K PVD on every product page with a written 12-month guarantee; most Swedish retail brands state 'gold plated' without process or thickness. That gap is exactly what this guide helps you shop around.
