Year date necklace in silver

The Monrich Team · 8 min read · 2026/12

To anyone reading those numbers, they look like a date. To the man wearing them engraved on the back of an ID bracelet, they’re the date his son was born. He sees the engraving every time he flips his wrist to check his watch. Nobody else has ever asked what they mean.

That’s date engraving in one example. Where coordinates need a specific place and initials need a name preference, a date works for anyone with at least one meaningful moment they want to carry. The strength of the format is also its limit: a date is invisible to strangers and instantly recognisable to the wearer, which makes it the most private form of personalisation available in men’s jewellery.

The mistake most men make is engraving the wrong date or the wrong format. Wedding dates are the obvious pick but often the most ordinary choice for a piece meant to last forty years. Birth dates of children work but can date badly if the child becomes estranged. Death dates of parents work for some men, but turn a bracelet into a memorial in a way some wearers find heavy. The choice of which date matters, and how to format it (UK day-month-year vs US month-day-year vs ISO year-month-day), affects how the piece reads.

This is the UK guide for date engraving on men’s jewellery in 2026.

I run Monrich, a UK men’s jewellery brand offering free date engraving on personalised pieces. Disclosure up front.

Section 01

Why engrave a date?

Signet ring engraved with year and figure

Permanent reminder

A date carved into metal lasts longer than the date in your memory. The piece becomes a touchstone for the moment.

Subtle to others, meaningful to you

Unlike a name or initial, a date doesn’t broadcast specific information to observers. Only those who know the significance read the meaning.

Heritage / heirloom

Dates carry generational meaning. A grandfather’s anniversary engraved on a passed-down ring connects multiple generations.

Universal occasion

Every life has multiple potential dates worth engraving: birthdays, anniversaries, milestones, memorials. The format works for anyone.

Section 02

Common dates men engrave

Wedding anniversary

The most common date engraving on men’s jewellery. Often on rings, sometimes on signet rings, dog tags, or pendants.

Birth date (own or child's)

Personal milestone date. Often inside a signet ring band or on the back of a dog tag.

Significant relationship date

Date of meeting a partner, first date, proposal, etc. More personal / sentimental category.

Milestone career or life date

Date of graduation, first job, business launch, sobriety date. Achievement-focused engravings.

Memorial date

Date of passing of a parent, grandparent, or significant person. Tribute engravings.

Birth year (alone, no month / day)

Just the year of birth. Common as a modern minimal alternative to full birth date.

Significant historical date

For some buyers: dates with personal cultural / historical significance (a national event, family migration date, etc.).

From section 02

Format: DD/MM/YYYY (UK) or MM/DD/YYYY (US) Example: 10/04/2020 or 04/10/2020

Section 03

Format options (numerical, Roman numerals)

Handwritten letter, rings and Monrich box

Numerical with slashes

Format: DD/MM/YYYY (UK) or MM/DD/YYYY (US) Example: 10/04/2020 or 04/10/2020

The standard, most readable format. Clear and immediate.

Numerical with periods

Format: DD.MM.YYYY Example: 10.04.2020

Cleaner aesthetic than slashes. Modern minimal.

Numerical without separators

Format: DDMMYYYY (or year first: YYYYMMDD) Example: 10042020

Most minimal. Slightly harder to read at a glance but very clean.

Roman numerals (traditional / elegant)

Format: X.IV.MMXX (day.month.year in Roman) Example: 10.IV.MMXX (10 April 2020)

The most “elegant” format. Traditional and timeless. Common on wedding bands and heirloom pieces. Requires more space than numerical format.

Spelled out (rare)

Format: “10 April 2020” or “April 10, 2020”

Takes significant space but unambiguous. Less common in modern engraving.

Year only

Format: MMXX or 2020

Most minimal. Often used as part of a longer engraving (initials + year).

For UK men in 2026: Roman numerals for sentimental / heritage pieces (wedding bands, signet rings), numerical with periods for modern minimal pieces.

Section 04

Where to engrave the date

Inside the band (rings)

Most common for wedding bands, signet rings. The date is hidden when worn (intimate, personal). The wearer sees it constantly when the ring is off.

Back of pendant or dog tag

The back is the “private” side. Engrave the date here, leave the front for visible information (initials, symbol).

Bottom of bracelet plate

Similar logic to ring inside-band. Hidden from view, visible to the wearer.

Visible on signet ring face

Date engraved as the main face design. Less common but powerful when the date is the centre of meaning (a memorial signet, an anniversary signet).

Visible on pendant face

Date as the focal engraving. Common for “day this happened” pendants (births, weddings).

From section 04

Date inside band (hidden) or as main face engraving (visible).

The piece that looks the part on day one and the piece that holds up at month six are rarely the same piece.
Section 05

Pieces that work well with date engraving

Monrich presentation box

Wedding band

The classic date engraving piece. Wedding date inside the band, Roman numerals or numerical format.

Signet ring (face or inside band)

Date inside band (hidden) or as main face engraving (visible).

Dog tag (back)

Date on the back of the dog tag, name or initials on the front.

ID bracelet plate (back)

Same logic as dog tag.

Pendant (back or face)

Memorial or anniversary pendant with date as primary engraving.

Cufflinks

Wedding cufflinks with date engraved on the underside. Less visible, more sentimental.

Monrich personalisation-eligible pieces include date engraving as free option on signets, dog tags, ID bracelets, and pendants.

Section 06

Real customer engravings (anonymised)

To give you a feel for how date engraving actually plays out in real life, here are anonymised examples from Monrich customers in the last six months.

A father ordered a signet ring engraved with his daughter’s birth date in Roman numerals. He wears it on his right pinky. He told us in a follow-up email that he looks at it every morning before he leaves for work.

A widower ordered a dog tag engraved with his late wife’s wedding date and birthday. The dates are on the back. The front is blank. He wears it under his shirt every day.

A couple celebrating 10 years ordered matching ID bracelets, his and hers, both with the wedding date engraved. They chose decimal Roman numerals (X.IV.MMXX). They wear the pieces on opposite wrists when they’re together at events.

A son ordered a sterling signet with his deceased father’s birth year (1958) and death year (2021) on the inside band. The front has his own initials. The piece is both his identity and his tribute.

These engravings outlast a phone, outlast a wallet, outlast most other personal objects men carry. That’s the value of date engraving on jewellery.

Section 07

Materials

Same as other engraved jewellery:

  • PVD-plated 316L: £40-150. Best daily wear value.
  • 925 sterling silver: £100-400. Premium daily / sentimental.
  • Solid 9K-14K gold: £400-2000. Investment / heirloom.
  • Solid 18K gold: £1000-4500+. Premium heirloom.

For date engraving on an heirloom piece (passed to your child): solid 9K-14K or 18K gold is the appropriate material. The piece outlasts you.

Section 08

Best practices

Use clear, unambiguous format

DD/MM/YYYY for UK is the most readable for date alone. Roman numerals are elegant but slightly harder to decode.

Don't engrave too small

The date should be readable. Letters / numbers at least 2-3mm tall for visibility.

Verify the date before engraving

Once engraved, the date is permanent. Triple-check before submitting.

Consider the relationship between date and material

A wedding date engraved on a £35 plated piece is a sentimental everyday item. The same date engraved on a solid 18K gold piece is an heirloom investment. Match the material to the importance of the date.

Combine with other personalisation

Date + initials: “10.IV.MMXX KMC” Date + name: “10.IV.MMXX Kevin” Date + symbol: date with small symbol next to it (cross, heart, anchor)

Avoid these mistakes

  • Engraving a date from a brief or uncertain relationship (you might regret)
  • Using a format you can’t easily decode 10 years from now
  • Engraving the wrong date (verify, then verify again)

Date + initials: “10.IV.MMXX KMC” Date + name: “10.IV.MMXX Kevin” Date + symbol: date with small symbol next to it (cross, heart, anchor)

FAQ

What format should I use for date engraving?

For UK men in 2026: Roman numerals (X.IV.MMXX) for sentimental / classic pieces (wedding bands, signet rings, heirloom). Numerical with periods (10.04.2020) for modern minimal pieces. Avoid US-style MM/DD/YYYY format unless you specifically prefer it.

Can a date be engraved later, after I buy the jewellery?

Yes. Most jewellers offer engraving services for £20-60 per piece. Brands offering free engraving (like Monrich) typically only include engraving on initial purchase.

What date should I engrave?

Most common: wedding anniversary or birth date. Most personal: a date with specific meaning to you. Avoid: recent relationship dates that might not last, dates that are meaningful only in the short term.

Can I engrave multiple dates on one piece?

Yes if space allows. A wedding band with both spouses’ birth years and the wedding date is common. A signet ring with date on face and family birthdates inside the band. Multiple dates work when planned and space-efficient.

Should I use Roman numerals for date engraving?

For sentimental / traditional pieces (wedding bands, heritage signets, heirloom): yes. For modern minimal pieces: numerical format is cleaner. Roman numerals look elegant but take more space.

How much does date engraving cost?

Laser engraving with new purchase: £8-30 (free at Monrich and many brands). Adding engraving to existing piece: £20-60. Hand engraving (for heirloom): £100-400+.
