ZAG Bijoux Review

ZAG Bijoux is one of the most established names in French fashion jewellery: founded in Paris in 2009, built on 316L stainless steel, sold through its own site and hundreds of retail jewellers across France, with one of the strongest customer-review records in the category. This is not a brand with a quality problem.

Which is exactly why the comparison is interesting. When the base material is the same on both sides, the useful questions become precise: what plating process, how thick, what does the warranty actually cover in writing, and what does a piece effectively cost.

Disclosure up front: we run Monrich, a men's jewellery brand in the same price band. Everything below about ZAG comes from its published product pages and policies at the time of writing, with no anecdotes. As a reference while you read, the men's Cuban chains collection shows our side of the comparison.

Section 01

Quick verdict

ZAG is a genuinely solid choice: hypoallergenic 316L steel, fine-gold plating applied by ionisation (the same vacuum-deposition family as PVD), clean French design and a one-year warranty against manufacturing defects. For a versatile everyday piece backed by a large retail network, it earns its reputation.

The gap is in what gets published. ZAG does not state plating thickness in microns on its product pages, and its warranty covers manufacturing defects rather than plating wear. If you want the number printed on every product page, a written 12-month anti-tarnish guarantee and a men's catalogue built specifically around Cuban and tennis chains, that is the territory Monrich occupies. Different emphasis, same base metal.

Section 02

Who is ZAG Bijoux?

4mm gold cuban chain, the daily width both catalogues serve

ZAG was founded in Paris in 2009 by designer Michelle Zhang, with her brother Hervé running the workshop side. The brand grew from a Parisian label into one of France's most distributed steel jewellery names.

  • Founded: 2009, Paris
  • Material: 316L stainless steel, nickel-free and hypoallergenic
  • Gold pieces: fine-gold plating applied by ionisation
  • Price band (men's line): roughly 30-120 €
  • Distribution: own e-shop plus a large network of French retail jewellers
  • Reputation: tens of thousands of customer reviews, strongly positive

The catalogue is majority women's, with a dedicated men's line of chains, bangles and rings in steel and black steel.

Section 03

The men's line, concretely

Representative pieces from ZAG's current men's collection, at published prices:

  • Collier Silouane, steel chain necklace, 55 €
  • Collier Quentin, steel necklace, 89 €
  • Collier Marc, the top of the men's necklace range, 120 €
  • Bracelet Jonc Thierry, steel bangle, 55 €
  • Bague Vincent, steel ring, 39 €

The design language is clean and versatile rather than statement-heavy: fine to medium chains, rigid bangles, sober rings, with a black-steel sub-line. What you will not find is the hip-hop end of the spectrum: no heavy Cuban links, no tennis chains, no iced-out pieces. ZAG's men's line is an extension of a fashion-jewellery house; it is not a specialist chains catalogue.

Section 04

Materials and plating

gold chain macro: two vacuum processes, one published number

Both brands start from the same place: 316L stainless steel, the corrosion-resistant, hypoallergenic grade. From there the processes diverge in disclosure more than in chemistry.

ZAG: gold models are plated with fine gold by ionisation, a vacuum process in the same family as PVD, and a genuine step above standard electroplating. Credit where due: this is a better process than most of the category uses. What the product pages do not state is the thickness of that layer in microns.

Monrich: 18K gold applied by PVD at a declared 1-2 microns, printed on every product page, and covered by a written 12-month anti-tarnish guarantee: if the plating shows visible wear within twelve months of normal use, the piece is replaced.

Why the number matters: plating lifespan scales with thickness as a general industry rule. Two vacuum-plated pieces can look identical on day one and live very different lives, and the micron figure is the only way to compare them before buying rather than after.

Section 05

Price comparison

The bands overlap almost exactly. The difference is the standing offer.

Piece ZAG Bijoux Monrich (list) Monrich (with permanent BOGO)
Steel chain necklace 55-89 € 50-90 € 25-45 € effective
Top-range necklace ~120 € ~110 € ~55 € effective
Steel ring 39-65 € 35-75 € 18-38 € effective

ZAG runs a classic retail pricing model. Monrich runs a permanent buy-one-get-one-free across the catalogue, which halves the effective per-piece price for anyone building a two-piece rotation. Prices are indicative bands at the time of writing; live pages decide.

Section 06

Warranty and aftercare

gold PVD chain worn in the pool: the case a plating guarantee exists for

ZAG guarantees its jewellery for one year from purchase against manufacturing defects, under normal use. That is a fair, standard policy, and the retail network means physical counters for advice and service, something a pure D2C brand cannot offer.

The distinction worth understanding: a manufacturing-defect warranty and a plating-wear guarantee are different documents. Plating that dulls or wears at friction points under daily use is typically classed as normal wear, not defect. Monrich's written guarantee covers precisely that case for 12 months, because the declared 1-2 micron PVD spec makes it affordable to promise.

Read both warranty texts before deciding based on either. The size guide covers the sizing side of avoiding returns altogether.

Section 07

ZAG vs Monrich

Criterion ZAG Bijoux Monrich
Base metal 316L stainless steel 316L stainless steel
Gold plating Fine gold by ionisation, thickness not published 18K PVD, 1-2 microns declared on every page
Plating guarantee 1-year manufacturing defects 12-month written anti-tarnish guarantee
Men's catalogue Extension of a fashion house: chains, bangles, rings Specialist: Cuban, tennis, signets, ID bracelets
Standing offer Retail pricing Permanent buy one get one free

The honest summary: ZAG wins on retail presence, brand trust built over fifteen years and versatile sober design. Monrich wins on published spec, plating-specific guarantee, effective price after BOGO and depth in the men's chain categories ZAG does not cover: Cuban links and tennis chains.

Section 08

Which should you buy?

Choose ZAG if: you want a sober, versatile steel piece from a long-established French house, you value trying jewellery on at a physical counter, or you are buying a matching piece from a brand the recipient already knows.

Choose Monrich if: you want specifically a Cuban or tennis chain, you want the plating spec in microns printed on the page with a written guarantee behind it, or you are building a rotation and the permanent BOGO changes the arithmetic. The men's rings collection covers the signet side of the comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Is ZAG Bijoux good quality?

Yes. ZAG uses hypoallergenic 316L stainless steel with fine-gold ionisation plating, a vacuum process above standard electroplating, and carries one of the strongest customer-review records in French fashion jewellery.

Is ZAG Bijoux real gold?

No. ZAG's gold pieces are 316L stainless steel plated with fine gold by ionisation. Like all plated jewellery, they are not solid gold, and neither are Monrich's pieces: 316L steel with 18K gold PVD plating at a declared 1-2 microns.

Does ZAG Bijoux have a men's line?

Yes: a dedicated men's collection of steel chains, bangles and rings, roughly 30-120 €, in a sober versatile style. It does not cover heavy Cuban links, tennis chains or iced-out pieces.

What warranty does ZAG Bijoux offer?

One year from purchase against manufacturing defects under normal use. Plating wear under daily use is a separate question: for that, compare written anti-tarnish guarantees, which Monrich publishes at 12 months on every piece.

What is the difference between ionisation and PVD plating?

They are the same family: metal deposited in a vacuum chamber, harder and denser than standard electroplating. The practical difference between two vacuum-plated pieces is thickness, which is why a declared micron figure matters more than the process name.
