Dog Tag Necklace UK 2026: Style + Personalisation

Informational + Commercial

The first dog tags weren't shaped like dog tags.

Silver dog tag layered with cross chain

The Monrich Team · 8 min read · 2026/10

In 1906 the US Army issued small round aluminium discs that soldiers stamped with name, regiment, and religion. They were called “identification discs”. The nickname “dog tag” came from a 1930s newspaper writer comparing the discs to the licence tags on city dogs. The name stuck. The shape changed in 1940 to the now-iconic rounded rectangle, designed to be snapped in half so one half could stay with the body and the other half could go back to command.

That’s the morbid origin most men’s jewellery articles skip over. The dog tag necklace is a piece of military identification turned into fashion. It moved into hip-hop in the early 1990s through artists like LL Cool J and Tupac, then into mainstream men’s accessories in the 2000s through brands like David Yurman and John Hardy. By 2026 you’ll see dog tags on three completely different demographics: ex-military men wearing the real thing, hip-hop influenced streetwear, and quietly engraved modern minimalist versions worn under a shirt.

This is the full UK guide. Origin, styles, sizing, engraving, brand picks, and how to wear one without it looking like a costume.

I run Monrich, a UK men’s jewellery brand with a dog tag range. Disclosure up front.

You can see the current men's dog tag pendants line-up for reference as you read.

Section 01

What is a dog tag necklace?

Engraved tag pendant necklace men

A dog tag necklace is a piece of men’s jewellery featuring a flat metal tag (typically rectangular with rounded corners), worn on a chain around the neck. The tag is usually engraved with personal information or symbols.

The defining features: - A flat rectangular tag, typically 50mm × 28mm (military standard) - Rounded corners - A hole or loop at the top for the chain - Often a small silencer (rubber edge) to prevent clinking on military versions

Modern variations: - Smaller tags (35mm × 22mm) for subtle wear - Larger tags (60mm × 35mm) for statement wear - Two tags layered (the original military standard was two tags, for identification redundancy) - Custom shapes (oval, rounded, beveled edges)

Section 02

The history of the dog tag

1906: US Army officially introduces aluminium identification discs for soldiers.

WWI: dog tags become standard issue across multiple national militaries. The name comes from the resemblance to identification tags worn by military dogs (the “dog” is meant ironically, the tags identify men, not dogs).

WWII onwards: dog tags evolve into the two-tag system (one stays on the body, one is removed for record-keeping in case of death). The 50×28mm rectangular shape becomes standard internationally.

1990s hip-hop: Dog tags transition into fashion through hip-hop, worn over t-shirts and tank tops by rappers and athletes. Often customised with gold plating, larger sizes, and personalised engraving.

2000s: mainstream fashion adopts dog tags. They become a regular men’s accessory in streetwear and casual menswear.

2010s-2020s: dog tags develop sub-categories: military-style (classic), fashion-style (chunkier or smaller), engraved personal (coordinates, dates, initials), religious (crosses, religious symbols).

Today (2026): dog tags are a mainstream men’s accessory category alongside Cuban chains and signet rings.

Section 03

Standard sizes and shapes

Gold pendants and tags held in hand

Standard military size: 50mm × 28mm

The original WWII US military spec, still the most common size today. Visible on the chest but not overwhelming.

Compact: 40mm × 22mm

For more subtle wear, especially under shirts or for smaller-framed men.

Statement: 60mm × 35mm

For visible / streetwear wear over t-shirts. Common in hip-hop styling.

Other shapes:

  • Oval dog tag: softer aesthetic, less military
  • Rounded square: modern variation
  • Beveled edge dog tag: the WWII US version with chamfered edges
  • Curved (anatomical) dog tag: designed to curve against the chest

For first dog tag: standard 50mm × 28mm is the most recognisable and versatile.

Section 04

Engraving options

Dog tags are designed for engraving. Their flat face is the canvas.

Initials

Most common. 1-3 letters, large enough to be readable from arm’s length. Center or top-aligned.

Name

Full first name or first + last name. Visible from close distance.

Coordinates

GPS coordinates of a meaningful place. Format: degrees / minutes / seconds (51°31’N 0°7’W for London). Increasingly popular in 2025-2026.

Date

Anniversary, birthday, milestone. Sometimes in Roman numerals for elegance (X.IV.MMXX for 10 April 2020).

Military-style format

Name + Service Number + Blood Type + Religion. Used for real military, occasionally for veterans wearing replica tags.

Symbol

Single meaningful symbol (cross, anchor, star, religious symbol, family emblem).

Memorial / tribute

Name of someone passed, with dates or quote. A common emotional purchase.

Quote / phrase

Short personal phrase. “Memento mori”, “Never not”, “Family first”, etc.

No engraving

A plain polished dog tag without engraving is increasingly popular as minimal statement.

Engraving process for dog tags: - Laser engraving: standard, sharp, lasts decades - Hand stamping: slightly less precise but more “authentic” military look - Etched engraving: chemical etching creates raised text effect

For mass-market dog tags: laser engraving is the standard. Cost typically £10-30 included or as add-on.

Chain styles for dog tags

Monrich packaging box

The chain matters as much as the tag.

Ball chain (the original military)

The traditional dog tag chain. Small round beads connected. Matt or polished finish. Looks military / utilitarian.

Curb chain

Slightly more “jewellery” than military, but still classic. Works for both daily wear and military aesthetic.

Cuban chain

Modern variation. The Cuban chain gives the dog tag a hip-hop / streetwear edge.

Cable / rolo chain

A thin cable chain reads as more minimal / refined. Works for subtle daily wear.

Leather cord

A leather cord gives the dog tag a rugged / outdoorsman feel.

Recommendation by aesthetic: - Military / utilitarian: ball chain - Streetwear / hip-hop: Cuban chain - Modern minimal: cable or rolo chain - Rugged / outdoor: leather cord - Classic / versatile: curb chain

Chain length for dog tags

  • 24 inches: standard length, dog tag falls at chest center
  • 22 inches: for shorter / smaller-framed men
  • 26-28 inches: for taller men or for layered look with shorter chain
The piece that looks the part on day one and the piece that holds up at month six are rarely the same piece.

How to wear a dog tag necklace

Over a t-shirt (visible)

24-inch chain, dog tag falls mid-chest. The military / streetwear look. Works with crew-neck and V-neck t-shirts.

Under a button-down shirt

24-inch chain, dog tag hidden under shirt. The “felt not seen” approach. Adds to personal style without being visible.

With a hoodie

Standard wear. Dog tag visible above hoodie zip or under it. Works either way.

With a suit

Hidden under shirt only. Wearing a dog tag visibly over a suit is intentional statement (works in entertainment / fashion industries, doesn’t work in finance / law).

Layered with other chains

Dog tag + Cuban chain layered is common. Standard: Cuban at 20 inches (above tag), dog tag at 24 inches (below). Creates clear visual layers.

Religious vs decorative

A cross dog tag is religious / spiritual. A coordinates dog tag is sentimental. A blank polished dog tag is purely aesthetic. The choice of engraving signals what the piece means to you.

Section 09

Pairing dog tags with other jewellery

Best pairings:

  • Dog tag + Cuban chain layered: classic streetwear / urban men
  • Dog tag + signet ring: military-themed coordinated set
  • Dog tag + ID bracelet: identification theme, coordinated personalisation
  • Dog tag alone: minimal statement

Avoid:

  • Dog tag + iced-out chains (visual clash, the dog tag’s masculinity is at odds with iced-out aesthetic)
  • Multiple dog tags (works only if intentional military-replica styling)

Caring for a dog tag necklace

PVD-plated dog tags

  • Wear freely (shower, gym, sweat)
  • Wipe occasionally with soft cloth
  • Engraving doesn’t need special care

Electroplated dog tags

  • Limit prolonged shower / pool wear
  • Wipe daily after wear
  • Replace when plating shows

Solid silver / gold dog tags

  • Silver patina cloth occasionally
  • Gold needs minimal care
  • Engraving may be hand-restored by jeweller over decades

Frequently asked questions

What does dog tag necklace mean?

Originally a military identification tag worn by soldiers. In modern fashion (since 1990s hip-hop), a personal jewellery piece often engraved with initials, names, coordinates, dates, or symbols meaningful to the wearer.

Are dog tags still in style in 2026?

Yes. Dog tags are one of the strongest men’s jewellery categories in 2026, alongside Cuban chains and signet rings. They’ve been consistently popular for the last 25+ years.

What size dog tag should a man wear?

Standard 50mm × 28mm is the most common and versatile. Smaller (40mm × 22mm) for subtle wear under shirts. Larger (60mm × 35mm) for statement over-shirt wear.

What length chain for a dog tag necklace?

24 inches is standard (dog tag falls mid-chest). 22 inches for shorter / smaller men. 26-28 inches for taller men or layered look.

Can you swim with a dog tag necklace?

For PVD-plated 316L: yes, no issue. For electroplated: limit prolonged pool / sea exposure to extend plating life. For solid 316L (no plating): completely water-safe indefinitely.

What should I engrave on my dog tag?

Most common: initials, full name, coordinates, date, or single symbol. The choice should be meaningful to you. Avoid generic phrases unless they have personal significance.

Are dog tags military?

The dog tag style originated in military. Modern dog tags worn as fashion are not military issue but borrow the iconic shape and engraving tradition. Wearing a dog tag does not require military service.
