Waterproof Jewellery for Men UK: What Actually Works

Informational + Commercial

"Waterproof" is one of the most abused words in men's jewellery marketing.

Gold PVD chain worn swimming, waterproof daily wear

The Monrich Team · 8 min read · 2026/09

Every brand uses it. Almost none mean what you think they mean. A piece is “waterproof” by their definition if water doesn’t immediately destroy it on first contact. By that definition, even the £6 plated chain from a tourist shop is waterproof. It just won’t survive being worn in the shower for six months.

What you actually want is different. You want a piece you can put on in January, wear daily through gym, sweat, summer beach, autumn rain, December showers, and have it look identical the following January. That’s the real “waterproof” bar.

Only certain material and plating combinations clear it. Here are the ones that do, and the brands that actually deliver against the claim.

Section 01

Quick answer

Waterproof gold chain men in pool water

Three combinations are truly water-safe for daily wear:

  1. Unplated 316L stainless steel (silver-tone, no gold)
  2. PVD-plated 316L stainless steel (gold-tone, declared plating like Monrich or Vitaly)
  3. Solid gold (14K, 18K, 22K) (premium tier)

Three combinations are NOT water-safe for daily wear:

  1. Electroplated stainless or brass (commonly found in mid-tier UK D2C ranges where plating thickness is not declared), where plating longevity in water-exposed daily wear is typically shorter than with declared PVD
  2. Plated brass / copper alloys (fashion jewellery), corrodes underneath the plating
  3. Sterling silver in pool chlorine, accelerated tarnish and pitting
Section 02

What does "waterproof jewellery" mean?

The marketing term “waterproof jewellery” actually conflates two different things:

  1. Water survival on contact: the piece doesn’t immediately break or react when water hits it. Almost all metal jewellery passes this.
  2. Long-term water resistance: the piece can be worn daily through shower, gym, sweat, swimming for 12+ months without visible degradation.

The second definition is what buyers actually mean. And it’s much narrower.

For men’s jewellery in 2026, this comes down to two factors: base material corrosion resistance + plating quality (if plated).

From section 02

The base material is medical-grade corrosion-resistant.

Section 03

What survives daily water exposure

Gold cross necklace at the beach, salt water wear

316L stainless steel (unplated)

The base material is medical-grade corrosion-resistant. Used for surgical implants placed inside the human body. Has chromium and molybdenum content specifically engineered to resist pitting from salt water and chloride exposure (sweat, pool, sea).

Wear time before visible change in water exposure: essentially indefinite. The silver-tone metal stays silver-tone.

PVD-plated 316L stainless steel

The PVD plating layer is molecularly bonded to the steel by vapour deposition under vacuum. The bond is much stronger than electroplating. The plating itself is 1-2 microns thick (3-10x typical electroplating).

Wear time before visible plating change in water exposure: 12-36 months. PVD plating is specifically designed for the watch industry where pieces see daily water exposure for years.

Monrich and Vitaly are the two main brands in UK / US market with declared PVD plating on 316L.

Solid gold (14K-22K)

The piece is the precious metal. No plating to wear. Gold is chemically inert in normal wear conditions.

Wear time: essentially indefinite. The piece is as durable as the metal itself.

Brands like Le Gramme offer solid gold premium ranges. Prices start at £500-800 for entry pieces.

Section 04

What doesn't survive water exposure long-term

Electroplated stainless or brass jewellery

The plating layer is thin (typically 0.1-0.5 microns) and bonded electrochemically. Water exposure accelerates wear by:

  • Chlorine in shower water and pools degrades the gold layer chemically
  • Soap residue and parfum residue settles in clasps and link joints, accelerating localised wear
  • Sweat carries chloride salts that cause micro-pitting

Realistic timeline: plating shows visible wear at 1-3 months instead of the 3-6 months you’d get with careful land-only wear.

This is most UK D2C men’s jewellery (Craftd, Cernucci, Twojeys, Serge DeNimes vermeil, etc.). Their pieces are marketed as durable but the plating doesn’t hold up to daily water exposure.

Plated brass / copper alloy jewellery (fashion)

The base metal can corrode underneath the plating, causing the plating to flake off and revealing green-blue oxidised base. This is the cheap fashion jewellery you find on Amazon and AliExpress under £20.

Sterling silver in pool chlorine

Sterling silver is corrosion-resistant in clean water but reacts with chlorine and certain pool chemicals over time. Long-term pool exposure can cause permanent pitting on sterling.

For occasional sterling pool exposure (annual holiday), no issue. For daily pool wear (athletes, swimmers), avoid sterling and use PVD-plated 316L instead.

From section 04

Realistic timeline: plating shows visible wear at 1-3 months instead of the 3-6 months you’d get with careful land-only wear.

The piece that looks the part on day one and the piece that holds up at month six are rarely the same piece.

Care tips even for water-safe pieces

Even truly water-safe jewellery benefits from basic care:

  • Wipe occasionally with a soft cloth to remove parfum residue, sebum, dust
  • Avoid abrasive cleaning (scrubbing pads, harsh sponges), even durable plating can be scratched
  • Store separately when not wearing, pieces stored in contact can scratch each other
  • Inspect clasps annually, clasps are higher-wear than the chain itself

For PVD-plated pieces specifically: - No special chemicals needed - Soap and water rinse is fine - A microfiber polish cloth restores any dulling from skin oils

Frequently asked questions

Can you really shower with PVD-plated jewellery?

Yes. PVD plating is specifically designed for water and chemical resistance. The watch industry uses PVD for gold-tone watches that see daily water exposure for years. Real PVD on 316L stainless steel shows essentially no degradation from daily shower exposure over 12+ months.

What's the difference between waterproof and water-resistant jewellery?

The terms are often used interchangeably. For practical purposes: “waterproof” implies indefinite water survival without degradation. “Water-resistant” implies surviving casual water exposure but with some degradation over time.

Solid gold and unplated 316L are truly waterproof. PVD plated 316L is water-resistant for years. Electroplated pieces are water-resistant only for short periods.

Can you wear waterproof jewellery in the sea?

Yes for solid gold, unplated 316L, and PVD-plated 316L. The chloride content of seawater is harsher than freshwater but these materials resist it. For electroplated jewellery, sea exposure accelerates plating wear significantly.

Does sweat damage waterproof jewellery?

For solid gold and PVD-plated 316L: no. For electroplated pieces: yes, sweat contains chloride salts that accelerate plating wear at high-friction points like ring bands and chain links.

How can I tell if my jewellery is really waterproof?

Check the material spec from the brand: - “PVD plated” or “IP plated” with declared thickness (1-2 microns): water-safe - “Gold plated” or “Gold electroplated” without thickness declaration: not water-safe long-term - “316L stainless steel” alone (no plating mentioned): water-safe (silver-tone) - “Solid gold” or “18K gold”: water-safe
